International Women’s Day – Celebrating Women’s Strength and Equality
A reflection from Aadya Meditation Centre and Academy (AMCA).
Your courage, resilience, compassion, and ability to navigate life’s challenges with strength and grace inspire us every day. On International Women’s Day 2026, we celebrate the countless contributions of women across the world who shape families, communities, institutions, and the future of humanity.
International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on March 8, honors the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. At the same time, it serves as a powerful reminder that the journey toward gender equality, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls must continue with renewed commitment and collective action.
This day invites us to recognize the extraordinary role women play in nurturing life, advancing knowledge, leading social transformation, and building a more compassionate and sustainable world. International Women’s Day reminds us not only to celebrate women’s achievements but also to reaffirm our responsibility to create a society where every woman is respected, supported, and empowered to realize her full potential.
Women’s Power in Ancient India
In ancient India, women participated actively in many areas of life, including education, philosophy, governance, medicine, and the arts. The Rigveda, one of the oldest known scriptures of humanity, contains several hymns composed by women sages, demonstrating their intellectual and spiritual authority.
Women served as queens, advisors, diplomats, and scholars, and historical narratives suggest that some even led armies during times of conflict. The status of women varied across regions, communities, and historical periods. While some societies placed women in positions of high respect and authority, others imposed social restrictions influenced by patriarchal structures.
Nevertheless, women played a profound role in shaping ancient India’s social, cultural, philosophical, and spiritual traditions, many aspects of which continue to influence modern Indian society.
The Significance of International Women’s Day in Vedic Period:

Among the most remarkable women of ancient India was Gargi Vachaknavi, a renowned philosopher believed to have lived around the 7th century BCE. She is often regarded as one of the earliest intellectual voices advocating philosophical inquiry and women’s participation in scholarly debates.
Gargi was a Brahmavadini — a seeker and knower of the highest knowledge of Brahman, the ultimate reality. Her philosophical dialogues recorded in ancient texts demonstrate extraordinary intellectual depth.
Alongside Gargi, scholars such as Maitreyi, Sulabha, and Vadava Pratitheyi are mentioned in the Upanishadic tradition as women who were deeply knowledgeable in the Vedas and capable of engaging in philosophical debates with renowned male scholars of their time.
Ancient literature also records many other women sages and thinkers, including Aditi, Apala, Lopamudra, Romasha, Yami, Indrani, and Vedvati. These women contributed to spiritual knowledge, philosophical inquiry, and cultural life.
Texts such as the Ramayana mention intellectual discussions in the court of King Janaka, where learned women also participated. We also encounter figures like Rishika Anusuya, remembered for her deep ecological awareness and spiritual discipline.
Historical narratives suggest that women of those periods often received formal education in subjects including philosophy, medicine, astronomy, and astrology.
Prakriti as Shakti – Nature as Divine Feminine Energy
In Hindu philosophy, the concept of Prakriti as Shakti represents the divine feminine energy that permeates the universe and governs the processes of creation, preservation, and transformation.
Prakriti refers to the natural or material dimension of existence, while Shakti represents the dynamic creative power that animates the universe.
This philosophical vision recognizes the feminine principle as the living force behind all manifestation. Shakti is the energy through which the cycles of birth, growth, transformation, and renewal unfold within the cosmos.
In spiritual traditions, Shakti is also associated with consciousness, awakening, and inner transformation. Through practices such as yoga, meditation, and devotion, individuals seek to connect with this divine feminine energy and awaken their own highest potential.
The Reverence for Feminine Divinity in Indian Tradition
In the spiritual traditions of India, the feminine principle is deeply revered through the worship of divine manifestations such as Devi Durga, Devi Lakshmi, and Devi Saraswati. These goddesses symbolize the essential powers that sustain human life and civilization — Durga represents strength and protection, Lakshmi represents prosperity and well-being, and Saraswati represents wisdom and knowledge. The reverence for these forms of Divine Feminine Shakti reflects an ancient recognition that creative power, wisdom, and nurturing energy are fundamental forces of the universe. This spiritual vision reminds us that honoring women in society is not merely a social obligation but also a reflection of a deeper philosophical truth — that the feminine principle is sacred and indispensable for the harmony of life.
Rig Vedic Reflection on Feminine Wisdom
One of the profound voices of feminine wisdom in the Vedic tradition appears in the Devi Sukta (Rig Veda 10.125), where the seer Vak Ambhrini, a woman sage, declares the universal power of the Divine Feminine:
“I am the sovereign power that gathers the treasures of the universe.
I give strength to those who seek knowledge and wisdom.
Through me alone all beings see, breathe, and live.”
This remarkable hymn reflects the ancient recognition that the feminine principle is not merely social or biological but cosmic and spiritual in its significance. The voice of Vak reveals the Divine Feminine as the living intelligence that sustains creation, knowledge, and life itself. Such insights from the Rig Veda remind us that reverence for feminine wisdom and power has deep roots in the spiritual heritage of India.
Challenges Still Faced by Women
Despite significant progress across many societies, women continue to face violence, discrimination, and psychological stress in many parts of the world.
Women’s safety, dignity, and freedom remain urgent global concerns that require continued social awareness and institutional reform.
The Role of Yoga in Women’s Well-being
In recent decades, many women have embraced yoga as a powerful practice for improving physical health and emotional well-being.
Yoga helps enhance flexibility, strength, balance, and vitality, while also reducing stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue. Regular practice promotes improved mood, better sleep, and a deeper sense of inner balance.
For women navigating the complex responsibilities of modern life, yoga provides a valuable pathway toward holistic health and inner stability.
Self-Defense and Personal Safety
Self-defence training is another important dimension of empowerment. Martial arts and self-defence practices equip women with the confidence and practical skills necessary to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations.
These disciplines not only improve physical strength but also cultivate mental courage, awareness, and self-confidence.
Financial Independence
Financial independence plays a crucial role in women’s empowerment.
Economic stability allows women to make decisions with confidence and autonomy. It provides security, dignity, and freedom to pursue meaningful goals without dependence on external support.
When women achieve financial independence, it strengthens not only individuals but also families, communities, and national economies.
Much Remains to Be Done
The world has made significant progress in advancing women’s rights over the past century. Women have broken barriers, challenged stereotypes, and made remarkable contributions to every sphere of human activity.
However, gender inequality still persists in many societies. Issues such as unequal pay, limited access to education and healthcare, and underrepresentation in leadership positions continue to affect millions of women.
In some regions, women are still denied fundamental human rights and subjected to violence and discrimination.
Steps Toward a More Equitable World
On this International Women’s Day, we must reaffirm our commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Some important steps include:
• Promoting gender equality in all spheres of life — at home, at work, and in public life
• Supporting and amplifying the voices of women from diverse backgrounds
• Investing in education and skill development for women and girls
• Advocating policies that ensure equal pay and fair opportunities
• Combating violence against women and supporting survivors
• Encouraging women’s leadership in politics, business, and civil society
• Challenging stereotypes and social norms that restrict women’s potential
The Feminine Energy that Sustains Life
In a deeper philosophical sense, the celebration of women reminds us of the profound feminine energy that sustains life and civilization.
In Indian philosophical traditions this life-supporting power is symbolized as Shakti, the dynamic creative force that manifests the universe. While pure consciousness represents the silent and unchanging reality, it is this feminine principle that expresses itself as movement, creativity, nurturing, and transformation.
The qualities of compassion, patience, resilience, and care — so often embodied by women — are reflections of this universal life-sustaining energy.
Modern feminist thought similarly emphasizes that empowering women is essential for the progress of humanity. When women receive equal opportunities to learn, lead, and innovate, society benefits from their immense intellectual, cultural, and moral contributions.
From the perspective of spiritual wisdom, the same consciousness shines within every individual beyond gender distinctions. True harmony emerges when masculine and feminine energies function together in mutual respect and balance.
Conclusion
International Women’s Day 2026 offers an important opportunity to celebrate the progress achieved toward gender equality while recognizing the work that still remains.
Women continue to contribute immensely to families, communities, science, education, governance, and spiritual life. Yet many women and girls still face barriers, discrimination, and violence.
True progress will come when societies consciously ensure that every woman and girl can live with dignity, safety, and equal opportunity.
When women rise, humanity rises.
An important dimension of empowerment is women supporting women. Shared experiences create networks of encouragement, mentorship, and solidarity that help women overcome challenges and realize their potential.
A society becomes more compassionate and balanced when women stand together with mutual respect and care. Supporting women strengthens families, communities, and the entire social fabric.
Let this day inspire us to recognize the dignity, wisdom, and strength of women everywhere and to work together toward a world where every woman and girl can realize her full potential.

Hello Arun! Thank you so much for sending me the link. I was totally unaware of this wonderful day to celebrate women all over the world. The life of Jesus has brought so many women into the forefront of society; where they had previously been relegated to strictly marital and maternal roles in the home. Jesus has opened so many doors for women❤️
Thank you so much for your beautiful words.
I am inspired.
Indeed Lord Jesus has done a lot for women.
I love Jesus.
Best wishes for your health and prosperity.
Regards 🙏
Thank you, Arun, for the excellent post, beautifully presented.

Thank You. No wonder the Indian tradition has chosen a female personality as the Goddess of Speech and Knowledge.
Maa Saraswati is Goddess of Speech and Knowledge.
Your posts are always full of highest knowledge whether it’s biology or chemistry or any other scientific knowledge.
My best regards to you Sir 🙏🙏
Sir, there used to be a upanayanam ritual for women in those days which is ridiculed and destroyed over the years. Women are respected for her vachikam tapah which is a discipline to watch quality of speech that’s why the voice of women sounds soothing to the listeners. It is sad to see wrong interpretations of women empowerment when the process is well explained in many ancient scriptures including the old Manu smriti. Correct me if I am wrong, happy to reflect from a well versed like you. Again appreciate your extensive knowledge of women’s righteousness through your article. Be safe and take care
Thank you so much for adding your lines in support of ancient systems. You are not wrong. You know these things since you have read Vedanta.
In this regard, I will quote DEVI SUKTAM. People must read that to know how the highest degree of Regards has been given to Devi Shakti.
Thanks a lot Vishnupriya.
Take care.
Arun, I love the two DISHA pictures, that you have included. Beautiful! Thank you. 🙂
I think, what mankind needs, is wisdom. It is wonderfully expressed in the lines of the book of “Brida”. These lines make great sense to me. How good to think about the value of wisdom on International Women’s Day!
Arun, you say: “Women still continue to be victims of abuse and violence and they are under continuous stress and anxiety.”
I agree, more women than men fall into this catagory.
I would say, a certain percentage of men do fall into this catagory too a lot of the time. What can be done for these men?

Thank you so much for your elaborated comments. I do agree to your point that women still continue to be victims. Very true. That is why proper education is needed from the childhood, irrespective of gender. Education without moral value is incomplete. Education must not be for earning only.
DISHA is a lady of our Vedanta [ Vedanta = ancient Indian philosophy] study group. She is Yoga expert and teacher too. I requested her to share two pics of her in Yoga pose.
Thank you for the complements.

I have gone through the article. Very sad. But now the situation is not like that. Almost 175 yrs back this happened.
“We are assembled to protest against a form of government, existing without the consent of the governed—to declare our right to be free as man is free, to be represented in the government which we are taxed to support, to have such disgraceful laws as give man the power to chastise and imprison his wife, to take the wages which she earns, the property which she inherits, and, in case of separation, the children of her love.”
Such a nice article Arun Ji. All the points you shared are totally right.
You said…Women still continue to be victims of abuse and violence and they are under continuous stress and anxiety. This is particularly true if we talk about India. Even in metros also women are victims of physical and mental abuse by their family members itself, leave apart the society. They are considered less than men and although they work harder than men, they are abused verbally and physically.
If women are financially independent it sometimes changes the story but not always. If they have support of their women counterparts at home or in office, definitely their life gets easier. Because woman is the greatest enemy of women. May be they think that every woman should suffer what they have suffered in their own life.
Women’s plight does not end here. They don’t have proper medical heath facilities and thousands of women die during child birth. They don’t even have proper abortion faciities and there is a high number of women dying from wrong treatments.
This is a vast subject and judos to you for writing on this topic.
Thank you so much for sharing.🙏🏻😊
Because woman is the greatest enemy of women.
VERY TRUE. That is why I have mentioned it in last line. In India, this problem is the main one.
I have just tried to catch few points and share with you all for addressing the problems.
Regards.🙏
*Kudos to you
