Pure Consciousness: How Can One Attain ?

The search for pure consciousness has fascinated spiritual seekers for centuries. Attaining pure consciousness means going beyond thoughts, emotions, and sensory distractions to a state of deep awareness. But how can one reach this higher awareness? Both ancient wisdom and modern science offer valuable insights.

The Mandukya Upanishad describes four stages of consciousness.

These are waking (Jagrat), dreaming (Swapna), deep sleep (Sushupti), and the ultimate state of Turiya—pure awareness and oneness.

Neuroscience mirrors this understanding. Brainwave patterns shift through Beta (active mind), Alpha (relaxed state), Theta (deep meditation), and Gamma (heightened awareness). However, to experience Turiya, one must go beyond these states and embrace the vibration of OM as AUM.

Each syllable of AUM corresponds to a state of consciousness:

  • A (Ah – Jagrat): The waking state, where the mind is outward-focused.
  • U (Ooh – Swapna): The dream state, where internal perceptions and subtle thoughts arise.
  • M (Mmm – Sushupti): The deep sleep state, a realm of profound stillness.
  • Silence after AUM (Turiya): The transcendental state of pure consciousness and unity with the absolute.

When chanting OM, the transition from sound to silence is crucial—it is in this silent awareness that Turiya is experienced. The resonance of AUM allows practitioners to transcend ordinary mental fluctuations, aligning the mind with universal consciousness. By meditating on AUM, one moves beyond thoughts, emotions, and sensory perceptions, attaining a state of pure being and ultimate bliss.
