The Joy of Studying Ancient Scriptures: A Reflection Through Advaita Vedanta
For me, studying ancient scriptures is a habit that brings profound joy and fulfilment. This joy is deeply rooted in the timeless wisdom and spiritual insights these texts offer. One such scripture that encapsulates this joy is the Mundaka Upanishad, a profound text of Advaita Vedanta.
The Mundaka Upanishad and the Joy of Knowledge
What is Joy? (Part-1) – ARUNSINGHA
Introduction
The Mundaka Upanishad, especially in Book II, Section II, explores deep intellectual concepts, providing insights fundamental to Advaita Vedanta philosophy. It clarifies the nature of Brahman, the supreme reality, and outlines the journey towards self-realization.
In this portion, the Upanishad describes Brahman as both the shaped (Saguna) and the shapeless (Nirguna), emphasizing the dual aspect of the divine. It addresses the metaphorical “knot of the heart,” representing the bondage of ignorance and attachment, and explains how the knowledge of Brahman can sever this knot, leading to liberation. The text further highlights that Brahman is the guiding force behind the mind, body, and life, residing in the heart and reflecting its light in all creation.
A particularly evocative passage state:
“He who knows Him as the shaped and the shapeless cuts through the knot of his heart, soothes every doubt, and exhausts every action. He becomes mind and guides body and life. He lives in Heart. He who knows Him can find joy and immortality. Neither the sun, moon, star, fire, nor lightning lights him. When He shines, everything begins to shine. Everything in the world reflects His light. Spirit is everywhere, upon right, upon left, above, below, and in front. What is the world but spirit?”

This shloka encapsulates several key concepts:
-
Dual Nature of Brahman: The shaped and shapeless aspects symbolize Brahman’s immanence and transcendence, illustrating the unity underlying all dualities.
-
Liberation through Knowledge: The “knot of the heart” signifies the entanglements of ignorance, which are dissolved through the realization of Brahman, bringing clarity and liberation.
-
Inner Guidance and Unity: Understanding Brahman as the inner guide and essence of all existence fosters a harmonious integration of mind, body, and spirit.
-
Ultimate Light of Consciousness: Brahman, as the supreme light, illuminates all existence, with every entity reflecting this divine radiance.
-
Omnipresence of Spirit: The pervasive presence of Brahman underscores the non-dual nature of reality, with the entire cosmos as a manifestation of the singular, undivided spirit.
Why do I study Upanishads? – ARUNSINGHA
This section of the Mundaka Upanishad provides a profound framework for understanding the essence of Brahman and the path to spiritual enlightenment, making it a cornerstone of Advaita Vedanta philosophy. Through its teachings, one is guided towards the realization of the ultimate truth and the boundless joy that accompanies such profound knowledge.
