The CIP Framework by Federico Faggin
The CIP Framework: Consciousness, Information, and Physical Space—A Vedantic and Scientific Synthesis:

About the Book
Federico Faggin, the physicist-inventor of the microprocessor, argues in Irreducible that consciousness and free will are fundamental, quantum-level properties of nature, not emergent by-products of physical matter. He introduces the CIP Framework—Consciousness Space, Information Space, and Physical Space—to propose a comprehensive model that aligns deeply with Advaita Vedanta. Faggin’s viewpoint challenges reductionist assumptions and bridges science and spirituality by presenting an idealist vision: reality emerges from consciousness, and quantum theory supports this view through principles like non-cloning and observer-dependent collapse

Inspired by physicist Federico Faggin’s groundbreaking CIP Framework, I will explore its profound resonance with the ancient wisdom of Advaita Vedanta. This post is a journey to synthesize the three interrelated domains of Consciousness, Information, and Physical Space with the Vedantic perspective, where consciousness is not an emergent property of matter but the fundamental substratum of reality itself. Through this lens, we can uncover a unified understanding of existence that bridges the gap between modern science and timeless metaphysics.
Introduction:
The convergence of Advaita Vedānta and modern science is becoming increasingly evident through the work of physicist Federico Faggin, author of Irreducible. His CIP Framework—with Consciousness Space, Information Space, and Physical Space—mirrors Vedānta’s view that consciousness is the ground of being, not a product of matter. Both systems reject reductionism and describe reality as arising from a subtle, non-material source. Insights from quantum physics, such as entanglement and the observer effect, support how C-space projects into I-space and manifests as P-space. The CIP model also aligns with panpsychism and Vedānta’s idea of a single conscious substratum pervading all. This post compares the CIP Framework vs. Vedānta, showing how science and spirituality both affirm that consciousness alone is real.
What is the CIP Framework?
The CIP Framework—proposed by physicist and consciousness researcher Federico Faggin—offers a revolutionary way to understand reality through three interrelated domains:
- C-space: Consciousness Space
- I-space: Information Space
- P-space: Physical Space
This triadic model resonates deeply with Vedāntic metaphysics, where consciousness is not an emergent property of matter but the fundamental substratum of all that exists. In this post, I interpret the CIP framework in light of Advaita Vedānta while also grounding it in mathematics and quantum physics.
The Three Spaces of Reality
C-Space (Consciousness Space)—The Semantic Field of Pure Awareness
C-space is the non-physical, non-local, non-computable realm of conscious experience. It is where meaning originates, prior to any representation, symbol, or form.
- It corresponds to pure awareness—Nirguṇa Brahman in Vedānta.
- It is not embedded in spacetime:
∂C / ∂x^μ = 0
(i.e., C-space is invariant under spacetime coordinates.) - C-space lies outside the Hilbert space of quantum mechanics:
C ∉ H_QM
This is the Pāramārthika Sattā—the absolute, immutable reality.
I-Space (Information Space)—The Bridge of Meaning and Potential
I-space acts as an interface between C-space and the physical world. It is the realm of information, symbols, and meaningful structure. This space carries semantic information projected from consciousness.
- It corresponds to the subtle body, Māyā-Śakti, or Īśvara—the intelligent cosmic order.
- Mathematically, it is modeled by the Hilbert space H:I = { |ψ⟩ ∈ H : ⟨ψ|ψ⟩ = 1 }
- Bohm’s Implicate Order is a scientific parallel.
- It represents the causal state, i.e., Taijasa in Vedāntic psychology.
Information here is not yet matter—it is potential, shaped by intention.
P-Space (Physical Space)—The Projected World of Experience
P-space is the gross, observable world—the realm of spacetime, matter, and measurement.
- It arises when I-space information collapses under observation by C-space.
- This is the domain of classical physics and empirical data.
- In quantum mechanics, a state |ψ⟩ evolves unitarily: |ψ(t)⟩ = U(t) |ψ(0)⟩, where U(t) = exp(-iHt / ħ)
- Upon observation, the wavefunction collapses:|ψ⟩ → |x⟩ with probability |⟨x|ψ⟩|²
- It corresponds to Sthūla Sharīra, the gross body, or Vaiśvānara state.
What we call “reality” is actually a virtual construction perceived by the observer—a consequence of the interaction between I-space and C-space.
Interactions Among the Three Spaces
| Transition | Scientific Description | Vedāntic Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| C → I | Projection of awareness into potential meaning | Brahman → Māyā |
| I → P | Collapse of potential into measurable outcome | Māyā → Prakṛti |
| P → I → C | Return via insight, reflection, and liberation | Gross → Subtle → Ātman |
Liberation (Mokṣa) and the Inverse Flow
Unlike creation, which moves from consciousness to matter, liberation (mokṣa) is the return path:
P → I → C
(via viveka—discrimination, vairāgya—detachment, and jñāna—self-knowledge)
- The physical world is first discerned as not-self.
- The information layer—thoughts, emotions, identity—is transcended.
- One realizes the witnessing consciousness, which never changes.
- This is Turīya, the fourth state beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.
Quantum Entanglement and Nonlocality
Entangled particles demonstrate that information is nonlocal, just like I-space. The collapse happens only when observed by a conscious entity—reinforcing the central role of C-space.
In Vedānta, this aligns with the idea that all forms arise from a non-dual substratum—and that the jīva (individual self) is none other than Brahman.
Summary
Consciousness (C-space) projects meaningful intention into quantum potential (I-space), which then appears as physical experience (P-space). But true liberation comes by reversing this flow — from appearance back to essence.
This synthesis affirms what both science and spirituality point to:
🕉️ You are not in the universe — the universe is in you.
My Personal Reflection
Mapping C-space to Nirguṇa Brahman, I-space to Īśvara, and P-space to the gross world has helped me see how even the most complex scientific frameworks ultimately lead to the timeless wisdom of the Upaniṣhads.
The concepts of Samaṣṭi (collective) and Vyaṣṭi (individual), as explained in Vedānta Sāra, beautifully align with the downward projection of Consciousness (C-space) into Information (I-space) and ultimately Physical manifestation (P-space) in the CIP Framework.
Let’s explore this reflection in detail:
Samaṣṭi–Vyaṣṭi Framework in Relation to CIP Model
1. C-Space (Consciousness) = Nirguṇa Brahman
- Samaṣṭi: Undifferentiated, universal substratum—Brahman, the pure existence-consciousness-bliss (sat-cit-ānanda).
- Vyaṣṭi: The Self (Ātman) in the individual is non-different from Brahman.
→ tat tvam asi - No division, no upādhis. This is Turīya—transcending all three states.
2. I-Space (Information) = Sūkṣma Plane, Māyā, Causal Body
Here’s where the distinction becomes essential.
🔹 Samaṣṭi: Īśvara (Cosmic Subtle Body)
- Īśvara is the total mind, the cosmic subtle field that holds all jīvas, karma, laws, and information.
- It is consciousness associated with Māyā—the collective causal body.
- Īśvara is the intelligent cause behind the universe.
🔹 Vyaṣṭi: Jīva (Individual Subtle Body)
- The antahkaraṇa (mind-intellect-ego complex) of each jīva arises from the I-space, limited by its own karma and vāsanās.
- Each jīva interacts with symbols in I-space, generating its own interpretation of reality.
So, I-space is Samaṣṭi → Vyaṣṭi:
Īśvara (Total Knowledge) ↘
jīva (Individual Cognition)
3. P-Space (Physical Space) = Gross World
🔹 Samaṣṭi: Virāṭ (Collective Gross Body)
- Virāṭ is the total physical universe, the macrocosmic embodiment of Īśvara’s will.
- All gross bodies (sthūla śarīras) arise within this collective reality.
🔹 Vyaṣṭi: Śarīra (Individual Gross Body)
- The physical body of a jīva, perceiving the world through its senses and instruments.
So, P-space =
Virāṭ (Samaṣṭi gross cosmos) ↘
Vyaṣṭi (Individual body & perception)

Downward Flow of Creation (From C to P)
Using Vedānta Sāra’s samaṣṭi–vyaṣṭi perspective:
- C-space → Nirguṇa Brahman = indivisible reality
- I-space → Īśvara (Samaṣṭi) → jīva (Vyaṣṭi)
- P-space → Virāṭ (Samaṣṭi) → Individual body & world (Vyaṣṭi)
Thus:
Brahman → Īśvara → Virāṭ (Samaṣṭi)
corresponds to
Ātman → jīva → śarīra (Vyaṣṭi)
Liberation: Inverse Movement (Vyaṣṭi to Samaṣṭi → Turīya)
Mokṣa is the realization that:
Vyaṣṭi Ātman = Samaṣṭi Brahman
“Tat Tvam Asi”
The jīva realizes its true nature not as a fragment, but as non-dual consciousness itself—beyond I-space and P-space.

Conclusion

This is a brilliant article that validates Vedanta theory of Brahm-the absolute reality by that with continuing discoveries by science in the field of quantum theory and origin of life. The irreducible theory of Mr Faggin must be a blow to western scientists who somehow try to prove that life is physics, and thus, some day it can be produced in laboratory, while Mr Faggin concludes that consciousness is absolute and independent of physical world-panchbhoot. The Brahm equates to consciousness-and is independent from the physical world-the final theory of Vedanta. Further Brahm is THE reason for creation and material world-called ‘sthool sharira’. Mr Faggin connects the two by his informational layer theory-which Vedanta connects in three layers(out of five-panchkosh) viz Pranmaya,Manomaya and Vigyanmaya. May I dare say science has to do more research! The writer, Mr Arun Singha deserves a great pat for his deep understanding in bringing forward the alignment between spirituality of Vedanta and analysis of science in structured fashion.

Nice read
Thank you so much 🙏
Reading about Faggin’s CIP framework feels like witnessing precision and coherence in action. He didn’t just search for answers—he engineered a way of thinking that mirrors how reality stacks itself: through nested patterns of insight, integration, and presence.
That’s the rare kind of elegant design—tools built for clarity, not complexity. Thank you for tracing that lineage. The best frameworks don’t just order data—they become lenses that reveal the coherence beneath the noise.
